It's not just about knowing what the customer wants. In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, consumers are bombarded with images and videos offering them ways to solve their problems. They already have numerous choices that make only minor improvements to their lives.

Revolutionary innovation solves problems that customers didn't know they had in the first place.

CONSUMERS

Is it better to focus on form or function?

Why choose when you can deliver the customer both?

At Sozo Design, we strive to create functional and reliable products that serve a wide variety of clients' needs. But we don't believe that this should result in clunky, unappealing designs. Our products are sleek and fun, and invite the user to try them.

Here are some of the items we have offered customers in the past.

The Go, designed with Kangatek, is a device for everyday wear. Many an urban professional would look perfectly at home using this sash to carry their smartphone, MP3 player, wallet or camera. And thanks to its sleek, form-fitting design, they won't feel like they're wearing a bulky harness. They can even wear it over either shoulder without sacrificing functionality.

Of course, for those consumers looking for something a bit more substantial, there's the Terrain. Designed with the Kensington Technology Group, this durable tote bag is large enough for books, tablets or even a laptop. Its top-loading form is ideal for easy access, and its materials are strong enough to carry some weight, without sacrificing comfort.

Does your backpack not fit right? Is it causing uncomfortable back pain? By working with Kensington Technology Group, Sozo helped create the Lumbar. This fully-adjustable support hugs the back and shifts more weight to the hips, resulting in a healthier balance that will not compromise a user's posture. Its design is such that the Lumbar can be fit into a backpack, out of sight.

One thing all of these items has in common is a need for quality zippers, and Sozo has it covered. With Kensington Technology Group, we created a Zipper Pull with a flared shaped and an elastomer grip to prevent slipping.

With these products, consumers can keep their hands free for other tasks. Why not lunch? Sozo has worked with 7-Eleven to create unique, convenient food packaging. For example, the Mega Bite Deluxe Sandwich offers everything people love about delis in a convenient, easy-to-carry package that can be taken everywhere. And that's not all. For those who are really in a rush, there's the PJ Roll. It's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a convenient wrap. And yes, there is no crust.

Whether you're rushing to work or picking up a snack, Sozo Design has likely developed an innovative product to fit your needs. And we have done plenty more work with a range of clients specializing in electronics, medical and manufacturing goods. Our goal is to fit into your lifestyle and create products that you will pick up instinctively—and use again and again.

MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing was hit hard during the global economic downturn, but for many businesses, this has actually provided an opportunity to innovate and grow. Never before has it been so important to consider all aspects of a company, identify inefficiencies, and streamline the manufacturing process so as to provide the customer with a quality product.

Businesses have many ways of doing this. One way is to make it easier for their current employers to multitask without becoming overwhelmed. Another is to ease the availability of supply information so that workers are aware of what materials they have to work with at any given time.

Sozo Design has products to aid in the advancement of both these goals. Designed to be visually appealing as well as practical, they will help your employees perform at their best.

The Go, designed with Kangatek, at first glance appears to be a device for everyday wear. This is true. Many an urban professional would look perfectly at home using this sash to carry their smartphone, MP3 player, e-reader or tablet. But it's more versatile than that. Manufacturing workers can use it to comfortably and securely hold tools, calculators, notebooks or anything else they need to work efficiently. And thanks to its sleek design, they won't feel like they're wearing a bulky harness. They can even wear it over either shoulder without sacrificing functionality.

Increasingly, manufacturing workers are using tablet computers to do their jobs. Given the layout of 21st century factories, this makes sense. An increasing amount of assembly is now mechanized, meaning that there are fewer human workers on the line. However, this means that the people who are working in the factory have more responsibilities than ever before, and that means increased multitasking, which tablets are perfectly suited for.

Of course, the factory environment is not always the safest place to keep an expensive—and often fragile—piece of computer equipment. That's where the Armor Case and Boot Case, designed for NYSE Euronext and Fujitsu, respectively, come in. These cases not only protect the tablets stored inside them, but also allow easy access to batteries and connector ports for optimal functionality. In addition, both are designed to be held and carried comfortably—in fact, the Boot Case has a specially-designed handle that can be adjusted or removed as needed.

With tablets, factory workers are better able to monitor supplies and operations, making for better efficiency.

MEDICAL INNOVATION

Between ongoing efforts to reduce costs and improve the quality of care, the medical industry is ripe for the level of experience-altering innovation that Sozo Design is known for.

In 2009, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act sought to promote the expansion of health information technology adoption, citing a need to provide better health services to a patient population that would increasingly have access to health insurance. The next year, the Affordable Care Act sought, among other things, to transition the health care industry from a fee-for-service system to one in which care providers are paid based on quality.

When hospital finances and patient health both depend on excellent service, it is more important than ever for care providers to have access to innovative devices that will transform the patient experience and produce a healthier global population. When patient health hangs in the balance, care providers require cutting-edge, proven medical devices. Sozo Design is responsible for a number of products that combine appealing design with practical effectiveness, including:

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an advanced method of treating cancerous and noncancerous tumors. Using multiple radiation beams, an IMRT device can precisely control the amount of radiation used, so that patients are not exposed to any more than what is absolutely necessary. Working with Varian Medical Systems, Sozo Design created the next generation Trilogy machine, which contains an integrated electronic portal imaging system. This allows for the most advanced IMRT treatments.
  • Patients that suffer from painful kidney stones, bezoars or gallstones, they may require surgical procedures. However, those who wish to avoid surgery may opt for laser lithotripsy, which uses fiber optic cables to deliver laser pulses that destroy the offending stone without requiring an invasive procedure. Sozo Design worked with Coherent Medical Group to create the PowerSuite 20W holmium laser for this purpose. Prior to developing the PowerSuite 20W, Sozo Design engaged in extensive research, including first-hand observation of Coherent Medical Group's product being used for laser removal and surfacing purposes.
  • Nasogastric tubes can be used to either administer drugs or liquified food directly into a patient's stomach, or drain the stomach's contents. Either way, these are delicate procedures that require a double lumen tube with an air vent so that the tube can flow freely without damaging the lining of the stomach. To improve this process, Sozo Design worked with MEDevices to create SightSure, which helps monitor the performance of these crucial tubes.
  • Macular degeneration, a process in which abnormal blood vessel begin to grow underneath the retina, can cause sudden, permanent vision loss in patients. Luckily, they have the option of undergoing Visudyne photodynamic therapy, which uses a combination of lasers and medication to destroy these blood vessels without harming eyesight. Sozo Design built off this therapy when it worked with Coherent Medical Group to develop the Opal Photoactivator GUI. Used in conjunction with Visudyne therapy, the Opal GUI emits a laser that activates the drug within a patient's eye.
  • Cancer patients have enough to worry about, be it their condition, their treatment and its side effects, and even their medical bills. There is no need to create more stress for them by presenting them with an operating room full of intimidating medical equipment. That's why Sozo Design developed the Silhouette. An arrangement that is meant to mimic different outdoor environments, this product offers patients a little extra comfort during their ordeal.

Patients and their care providers have different needs. In order to meet them, designers must be creative while keeping a close eye on practical effectiveness.
